KUBA AFRICAN HAND WOOVEN TEXTILE

Unique to the Congo region of Africa, these clothes are made of palm leaf fiber that is processed and woven by the men. The embroidery & appliqué is done by the woman. Check out the amazing geometric designs that are cut to form pile and resemble velvet. The pattern & repetition shift thru out these textiles. The Shoowa people are masters in this embroidery and weaving technique. The deep reds are derived from a tropical local hardwood and are believed to imbue magical & protective properties. We all need protective power but the sheer beauty of these textiles are enough. These clothes were once used as currancy, as status symbols, exchanged in dowries and used in funeral shrouds.

this one measures 20.5 across by 22” long
